Fabricting Brake Pedals for Street Rods

Brake pedals are one of the most popular component people usually fabricate for their custom vehicles. This is because custom made brake pedals not only increase the attraction of the car but they also increase the pedal area you come in contact with. This is something beneficial if you have shoes that take up large surface areas. Realizing the amount of benefits one can reap from this, we would like to include a guide on how to build your own custom brake pedal in this article.

Now, before we begin, there are several factors you'd need to consider. Parameters such as the height and angle are crucial for constructing a comfortable and safe pedal for daily usage. For the height of the pedal, you will need to consider how high you can lift your foot and how fast you can shift between pedals. This is important to avoid interference problems when shifting from one pedal to another. Besides that, you will also have to consider the height based on the size of your feet and the length of your legs.

After considering how high you want your pedals to be, you will need to take some measurements around the pedal area. These measurements are crucial to ensure that there is enough clearance between the pedal and the floor. Inaccurate measurements will often lead to inaccurate constructions. You might that find the when hitting the brakes, the pedal reaches the floor but the brakes don't fully apply to the wheels. This is something that you must always aim to avoid.

Next, with the parameters and measurements taken, we can proceed with the designs of the pedal. Now, most people would want some cool designs for their pedals. In fact, we have seen pedals that are so unique that we thought it was something else. Basically, it's up to you to decide how you want your pedals to look like. However, it is advisable to avoid fabricating protruding edges around the pedal surface, or you might risk entanglement during a critical situation.

When you're done with the designs, carve them out from a cardboard. This will allow you to test fit the mock-ups and get the feel of the end product. Basically, you would want to check whether the mock-ups fit your foot size and leg length before fabricating the actual product.

Finally, after collecting numerous data and making the needed adjustments, it's time to fabricate the real thing. For this project, we'd recommend using a half to three quarter inch steel plate as the structure of the pedal. Start out by cutting the desired length from the steel plate. For bended edges, clamp the plate to a wooden block and hammer the edges lightly to form an angle. Let your imagination run wild and experiment with different ways to create a unique pedal. Don't forget to smoothen out any ripples or uneven edges on the surface. This is a very important step that you must not leave out in order to protect your feet from injuries when you step on the pedal.

Processing the pedal might take some time, but once you are done with it, we can move on to the pivot shaft. For this, you must find the precise location that will provide the optimum pedal movement. You can do this by placing the pedal on the shaft and tilting it until you get what you are looking for. Next, look out for the spacing between the pedals. If you find the pedals rather packed, weld a standard nut to the pedal arms to adjust the distance. Lastly, drill a hole at the tip of the pivot shaft, and the you are ready to assemble the product.

Assembling the pedal is rather simple, all you have to do is join the back of the pedal to the hole you drilled into the pivot shaft with a fastener. Besides that, if you're feeling up to it, you can also fabricate custom brushes to keep the interior free of dirt and dust and some stainless steel retainers to hold the brushes in place.
